PRESENTATION
PRESENTING THE
FESTIVAL AT PALAZZO VENEZIA
International exhibition of art films and documentaries in Rome
The “Festival at Palazzo Venezia” is the exhibition of art films and documentaries that has been lacking in the field of cinema events and prizes in Italy.
Though the fact seems paradoxical, since Italy is universally recognised as the cradle of Western culture, our country has never hosted a major international festival concentrating on productions dealing with art, artists, visual experimentation and cultural heritage.
The opportunity of presenting to the public the best of the enormous repertoire (cinematic, documentary and docu-fiction) produced each year all over the world, and present it in Italy, is in itself an event that will also involve the entire Italian field of cinema and television in a simple question: “If Italy is the land of art, why shouldn’t it also be able to transfer and communicate this heritage to the world, through its own direct, productive efforts?”
The Festival will take place in Palazzo Venezia, also the future site of an audio-visual archive on art, and in other historic sites in Rome, during the next-to-last week of May 2004, with contributions from the Special Superintendency for Rome’s Museum Coalition, the Lazio region, the province of Rome, the city council of Rome, the Dante Alighieri Society, the Istituto Luce, RAI Educational, and the Superintendency for the Museum Coalition of Naples.
There are four sections of competition:
1. Art films and documentaries
With the most important works from 2000 to the present in the field of “story-telling” using images, on art-related themes: exhibitions, solo shows by artists, restoration, events, investigations, TV programs and critical studies, exhibitions and artist’s photographers.
2. Films and documentaries about artists
With the most important works from 2000 to the present in the area of biographical “story-telling” of variously understood artistic experiences: memoirs, testimonials, repertory documentaries, artists’ stories about themselves and other matters, artists at work, and the history of art and artists.
3. The art of building
With the most important works from 2000 to the present in the area of architecture as “art”, including documentaries on monuments, churches, museums, palaces, cities, villages, modern and contemporary architectural projects, restoration, “landscape” interventions, gardens and so on.
4. Art as experiment
With the most important works from 2000 to the present in the area of research and visual experimentation, particularly aimed at schools and universities that offer study programs in cinema as visual art, and also including study and specialisation in the creative phase and related techniques: essays and animation shorts, experimental films, auteur documentaries and university essays.
The festival is supported by related exhibitions from Italian and international archives.
